March 16, 2009 At a meeting of Community Board 2's Parks and Recreation subcommittee, Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation (BBPDC) President Regina Myer presented an updated construction schedule for Pier 6.
The BBPDC anticipates opening a portion of Pier 6 and its uplands by the end of 2009. This section of the park near Atlantic Avenue will include a 1.6 acre destination playground with a swing "valley," slide "mountain," wooden structures, and water play area; a dog run; a 30' wide promenade onto Pier 6; a park concession building with 1000 square foot restaurant and roof top deck; and three sand volleyball courts.
Construction company Skanska has begun prepping the site for utilities and base structural work. In the next few weeks, they will begin importing bulk fill to bring the site to grade level. Structural work on the playground area and preparation for a prefabricated park gatehouse (which will be clad with reclaimed timbers from the onsite Cold Storage Warehouse) will begin in the spring, as well as construction of the volleyball courts and dog run. In the summer, Skansks will import horticultural soil and begin planting trees and shrubs. Through the fall and winter, Skanska will complete the park finishes, including paving pathways, completing the lawn and ground cover plantings, and installing site furnishings and playground equipment.

January 12, 2009 At a meeting of Community Board 2's Parks and Recreation subcommittee, Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation (BBPDC) President Regina Myer presented an updated construction schedule for Pier 1.
Construction company Skanska has begun installing utilities on the site, and by February will be importing 60,000 cubic yards of fill and topsoil (enough to fill Boro Hall 2x) by truck. This fill will be used to create the grading, including a 25 foot hill, on Pier 1. By spring they will begin to put in finishes, including placing steps, building a gate house, placing top soil, and beginning playground construction. By the end of Spring they will be planting trees and shrubs, laying sod, turf, and ground covering. In the fall Skanska will be installing the paved pathways, benches, and railings.
Opening in Two Phases
The BBPDC anticipates an early opening of the two large lawns in winter 2009. Work will continue on the southern end of Pier 1 through the spring, with removal of pier deck (leaving the pile fields), and construction of a small boat ramp. The southern end of Pier 1 is scheduled to open summer 2010.
Pier 1 will include 9.5 acres of green space, and cost approximately $50 million to build. New in the plan is a set of grand "river steps" made from granite salvaged from the Roosevelt Island Bridge which will cascade from the lawns to the waterfront promenade. Also included is a small .15 acre "tot lot" playground with swings, spring rockers, and stainless steel climbing domes for small children.

Brooklyn Bridge Park is on the move. In the first major site work on the Piers section of the future Brooklyn Bridge Park, construction crews began tearing down the shed on Pier 1 early on Thursday, March 13.
The Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation, who is charged with the park's design and construction, anticipates that demolition will be complete by September 2008, with construction beginning immediately thereafter. This first phase of site work includes demolition of the pier sheds, adjacent buildings on the site not included in the park plan, and the Purchase Building.
