Brooklyn Bridge Park Announces Pop-Up Pool will be Extended for One More Season

Brooklyn Bridge Park (BBP) today announced that the pop-up pool will be extended for one more season through September 2018. The pop-up pool at Pier 2 first opened in 2012, and includes a beach, deck concessions, showers, and restrooms, and is free and open to the public.

The temporary pop-up pool is located in the site of the future Pier 2 uplands where construction is expected to begin in the fall of 2018. The pool is 30 by 50 feet in size, and maxes out at 3.5 feet deep. During the pool season, swimmers of all ages and levels are welcome to enter daily from 10 am to 6 pm for 45-minute sessions, with a capacity of 60 in the pool at one time.

“We’re thrilled that we will be able to have one more season of the pop-up pool next summer,” said Eric Landau, President of Brooklyn Bridge Park. “It’s been an amazing summer destination for Brooklynites and visitors every year that it’s been open and we look forward to another great pool season in 2018.”

“The pop-up pool at Pier 2 made a true ‘splash’ when it first opened, and for years it has been a summer hot spot for children and families from across our borough,” said Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams. “I am pleased that Brooklyn Bridge Park is showing their responsiveness to the community’s call for another year of this aquatic attraction.”

“Let’s keep a good thing going,” said Council Member Stephen Levin. “This pool has a special place in the hearts of the community and I’m proud Brooklynites will be able to enjoy it for another year. Kudos to Brooklyn Bridge Park for its continued support of public amenities, especially those utilized by children and their families.”

“I am thrilled to hear that families and neighbors from all backgrounds will be able to enjoy continued free access to what has been proven to be a successful and fun summer destination,” said Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY). “I applaud those at Brooklyn Bridge Park for their hard work to ensure that Brooklynites can visit the pop-up pool at Pier 2 for what will be another great summer season.”

“I am delighted that the Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation will be able to provide another season of the pop-up pool in the park. Everyone loves the pop-up pool, which is another great way to enjoy our treasured park and waterfront. With few local swimming options, keeping the pool open for another season will make parents, children, and other visitors happy for another enjoyable summer!” said Assemblymember Jo Anne Simon.

“Much like a year ago, LOP is thrilled that Brooklyn Bridge Park has listened to the community in choosing to keep the beloved Pop-up open an additional year,” says Love Our Pool co-organizer Lee Levine. “Eric Landau and his leadership team recognize how a community pool is critical to the success of a great urban park meeting the needs of the community both near and far. Love Our Pool believes this is a necessary first step toward our ultimate goal of securing a permanent pool in Brooklyn Bridge Park. And we will continue to work with the Park on making that vision a reality.”

Brooklyn Bridge Park Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation, known as Brooklyn Bridge Park (BBP), is the not-for-profit entity responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance and operation of Brooklyn Bridge Park, an 85-acre sustainable waterfront park spanning 1.3 miles along Brooklyn’s East River shoreline. As steward of the park, BBP has transformed this previously deteriorated stretch of waterfront into a world-class park where the public can gather, play, relax and enjoy sweeping views of New York Harbor. The self-sustaining park was designed by the award-winning firm of Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, Inc. and features expansive lawns, rolling hills, waterfront promenades, innovative playgrounds, a greenway, sports facilities and the popular Jane’s Carousel. BBP serves thousands of people on any given seasonal day, who come to picnic, walk their dog, play soccer, jog, bike or roller skate. Brooklyn Bridge Park is a signature public investment for the 21st Century and will be an enduring legacy for the communities, elected officials and public servants who made it happen.
