Staff Profile: Aaron Smith

November 4, 2025

We’re spotlighting our team — the people who show up every day to make Brooklyn Bridge Park the special place that it is. Today, we highlight Aaron Smith, our in-house arborist helping care for over 3,000 trees in Brooklyn Bridge Park!

Q: What do you do at Brooklyn Bridge Park?
A: I’m the arborist here at the park, which means I care for all the trees, from diagnosing issues to addressing broken limbs, performing removals, and supporting long-term health. I work closely with our directors and gardeners to manage day-to-day tree care and broader landscape planning.

Q: What made you want to work at Brooklyn Bridge Park?
A: After 14 years as an arborist in the private sector, I’d been thinking for a while about transitioning into public work. I’ve visited Brooklyn Bridge Park for years, and it’s always felt like a second home. I started working here in February 2025. The location, the people, the mission—it all made this a natural next step.

Q: What’s been the most rewarding part of your job so far?
A: Just getting to experience this urban park every day and being around others who are passionate about caring for it. That sense of shared purpose is really meaningful.

Q: Is there a project you’re especially proud of?
A: I recently wrapped up a pneumatic soil excavation project (also called airspading) to address soil compaction around tree roots and correct improper planting depths. I’ve treated about 100 trees so far. It’s a technical but rewarding process that directly supports tree health.

Q: Any advice for someone who wants to work in a public park?
A: Love where you work. If you’re not excited about public space or engaging with the people who use it, it’s going to be tough. But if you are, it’s incredibly fulfilling.

Q: What do you enjoy outside of work?
A: Long walks, biking, and exploring other natural spaces around the city. I also love music; I’ve made music in the past and hope to get back into it.

Q: Anything you’d like to add?
A: I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the people I work with. The team at Brooklyn Bridge Park,  especially my directors, has made this transition and experience truly special.
