Glide along the water this summer and fall in our protected embayment with free public kayaking!
Presented in partnership with Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse, free kayaking is offered throughout the summer on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, Saturdays, and Sunday afternoons. All levels are welcome including first-time kayakers — life vests and all equipment provided, as well as instruction. Children under 18 must have an adult guardian present. Meet at the north entrance of Pier 2, look for the floating dock.
Advanced registration required, providing 20 minute timed slots. Free registration opens 2 weeks ahead of each date through the Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse website. View all kayaking dates here. Please note that holiday weekends may be skipped; please check the schedule.
Don’t see any available time slots? Check back! Registration opens on a rolling basis, 2 weeks ahead of each date. Occasionally, slots may open due to cancellations. Extremely limited walk-up spots may be available in the case of no-shows.

There are public restrooms at Pier 2 in the nearby orange building where you can change and lockers for 25 cents. Please note that items may not be stored overnight, any items found will be removed.
If you leave your items unattended promenade, please note we are not responsible for watching them.
Yes. This advanced registrations help us manage the crowd.
You can expect to be on the water for around 20 minutes. Everyone is required to return at the end of that time period.
Yes, kayaking may be canceled due to inclement weather or conditions. Check the Alerts & Updates page, but be aware that conditions on-site can change rapidly, requiring cancelation without notice.
Yes, kayaking in Brooklyn Bridge Park is completely free. The Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse runs on the generosity of our volunteers and your donations.
Sorry, no. For safety reasons, we cannot accommodate animals in our kayaks.
Our kayaks are pretty stable and people rarely fall into the water. However, if you do fall in we have safety boaters on the water to help you get back in.
No problem! Beginners are welcome. The staff will explain all you need to know before heading out on the water. We have safety boaters in case you need additional instruction once on the water as well.
Free public kayaking run by Brooklyn Bridge Park in partnership with Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse is run at Pier 4 Beach for the start of the 2025 season.
Personal kayaks, canoes, or other human-powered boats may also be launched from Pier 4 Beach.
Yes, be prepared to get a little wet from the waist down.
Yes, if you find an item in the Park you can give it to any Park staff member or drop it off at our office at 334 Furman Street (near Pier 5). If you have lost an item please complete this form here, if the item is found we will contact you.
