Asherde Gill is the Development Associate for Brooklyn Bridge Park, working with the Development team to keep track of fundraising data that can benefit the Park in the future. Their abilities in this field originated from their work in their previous role.
“I used to work at Epic Theatre Ensemble, where I was teaching in high schools, working with students from the city to develop plays,” they said. “But I was also working on grant writing and supporting development over there, and I really got a sense, through that work, of how good fundraising – like a good solid development team – can really have a deep impact on the community that they serve.”
“So being able to ask questions and identify the things the community needs, [seeing] that in the data, and then transferring all of that into writing that can then get grants and funding.”
A Brooklyn native, Asherde was interested in this role at the Park because they wanted to grow in a new role, but also because they have been coming here since their teen years.
“This park has been a big part of my community for a long time, something that has brought me and my friends together,” they said.
Now, within the office environment, Asherde has developed work friendships that help them navigate their role.
“I have a great support in Nate [Bonzagni, BBP’s Development and Special Events Manager], who has offered a lot of feedback anytime I have a question. He has welcomed each question that I have asked with care and generosity. I really appreciate his support,” Asherde said.
A longtime fan of Brooklyn Bridge Park, Asherde’s favorite spot is the Pier 3 Labyrinth. Outside of work, they enjoy large format photography – and plan to shoot in the park – as well as playing the steelpan.
