Earth Day Celebration

Celebrate Earth Day 2025 and the arrival of spring in Brooklyn Bridge Park!

RAIN UPDATE: Our Saturday, April 26 Earth Day Celebration is still on, but some events have been relocated due to forecasted rain, as noted below. Hope you’ll still join us for plenty of fun and educational activities throughout the day!

Emily Warren Roebling Plaza , 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM

  • E-Waste Collection: hosted by Lower East Side Ecology Center (drop-off beings 10 AM, rain or shine!)
  • City Nature Challenge: stop by our table for info and prizes (the challenge runs through Monday!)

The following events have moved to the Environmental Education Center, 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Open Hours will begin earlier and include:

  • Special Activities from Earth Matters & Climate Families (11:00 AM – 2:00 PM)
    • Earth Matters: Support Earth Matter’s mission to help reduce organic waste misdirected into the garbage stream. Learn about composting, get tips and advice, and how you can encourage neighbor participation
    • Climate Families NYC: Learn how families can support climate change legislation and participate in a letter writing activity for kids and adults
  • Hila The Earth Performance and Photo Op (1:00 PM)
  • Eco-Art Project by BBP Environmental Educators: Contribute to our community eco-art project! Using collected (and disinfected) plastic pollution from our Park’s shorelines, we’ll upcycle and turn trash into treasure!
  • Plus, the Ed Center’s regular interactive exhibits, displays, and living collections!

Note that the Coastal Cleanup has been cancelled.

Learn about Brooklyn Bridge Park

More than 13,000 timber piles support the piers in the Park.

Long Leaf Yellow Pine from the demolished Cold Storage Buildings is reused as cladding on park structures and custom-designed park benches.

Construction of the park began in January 2009.

Granite Prospect is a dramatic set of steps built from over 300 pieces (approximately 2000 linear feet) of granite stones salvaged from the Roosevelt Island Bridge reconstruction.

Over 500 trees are planted on Pier 1.

37 nautical bollards were savaged and reused in the Pier 3 Labyrinth.

The monarch butterfly is one of the most frequent visitors to the Pier 6 Flower Field. Seen the most often here in late August while on their great annual migration.

Pier 6 contains an underground rain water retention system that can hold up to 127,000 gallons of water. This reused stormwater will contribute to the park’s horticultural water needs.

Nearly 500 different species have been identified on Pier 6: more than 50 different birds; 200 insects; and more than 200 different plant species.

Several park structures have green roofs, which serve to absorb rainwater, provide building insulation, and create new habitats for wildlife and lower urban air temperatures.
