All participants are required to sign a waiver upon arrival (all ages welcome but those under 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian, and those under 16 must be supervised at all times). Closed toe shoes are required.
  • Learn about volunteering at Brooklyn Bridge Park: Speak with volunteer staff and volunteers to learn about ongoing volunteer opportunities at Brooklyn Bridge Park.
  • Join Re:Create Plastics for a Bottle Cap Upcycling demonstration to learn about different types of plastic and learn how recycling in NYC works – as well as how small plastics like bottle caps and lids that are often lost or rejected from traditional recycling can be collected and transformed through community micro-recycling and using 3D printers. See examples of plastics sorted by types, examples of 3D printed useful items from plastic scraps – and watch some being formed, and learn more about how you can take part. Feel free to bring clean bottle caps for recycling!
  • Stop by NYC Ferry‘s table to learn about their ferry service, discounted tickets and Ferry Discount Programs, and enjoy NYC Ferry themed coloring pages for kids and families to enjoy at the event, or take home for later use.
  • Learn about natural fabric dying with local biodesigner Tajah Ellis and bring natural materials (cotton/silk/linen) to dye with indigo for your own custom piece. Her work with bio-materials and ecological excavation for dyes and pigments transforms plant matter into a vibrant range of colors, textures, and patterns. Items for dying should be washed ahead of time with a PH balanced soap and no softeners or dryer sheets used.
  • Learn about composting with Big Reuse. Learn how to use finished compost for your plants and gardens and take some home with you. They will also be giving away free kitchen compost containers (while supplies last).

We’ll also have a donation/recycling collection for textiles, gently used books, gently used children’s clothing and toys, and e-waste, as well as paper shredding. Please check below for details on accepted items.

Learn about Brooklyn Bridge Park

Timber seating and climbing platforms in the playground are made from reclaimed Long Leaf Yellow pine that was extracted from demolished warehouses on the park site.

Granite Prospect is a dramatic set of steps built from over 300 pieces (approximately 2000 linear feet) of granite stones salvaged from the Roosevelt Island Bridge reconstruction.

More than 13,000 timber piles support the piers in the Park.

The first section of the Park opened was Pier 1 in March, 2010.

37 nautical bollards were savaged and reused in the Pier 3 Labyrinth.

Nearly 500 different species have been identified on Pier 6: more than 50 different birds; 200 insects; and more than 200 different plant species.

The monarch butterfly is one of the most frequent visitors to the Pier 6 Flower Field. Seen the most often here in late August while on their great annual migration.

Trees, lawns, and shrubs are managed organically

Several park structures have green roofs, which serve to absorb rainwater, provide building insulation, and create new habitats for wildlife and lower urban air temperatures.
